Can someones checks be tapped to pay for an item they possess but refuse to pay for?

My friend's son has left her with a $3000+ bill, which will ruin her credit, for something he has hidden so it won't be repossessed, and he has vanished into thin air. All internet leads have been fruitless. He is not working at present time. Isn't there a way to stop this cat and mouse game before it ruins her credit?
